Finding a Great Massage Therapist takes persistence and patience. What makes a massage therapist great to one person often is the thing another person hates. Massage is such a personal experience and it may take awhile to find the perfect fit but with knowing more about what to ask and knowing yourself, you can often find one that you will never want to leave and you won't want to give their name out to others because then they will get too busy to get you on the schedule.

Many states license massage therapists as health care providers which does help weed out some irresponsible therapists but it is not 100% effective. There are still many massage parlors offering "other" services that are giving the profession a bad image. In licensed states, you can go to the state board website and often find a list of licensed providers to confirm their status.

Some of the places to look for a therapist:

1. Ask your friends, family and co-workers first! There is nothing better than a recommendation from someone who has had a massage from that person. (But remember who the source is and if your needs are similar to theirs.)

2. Ask your physician or other health care provider for a referral.

3 Search online for one close to your home. ("Massage, Seattle") Anyone who has taken the time to get their massage website up and running to be on the top few pages of results should be put on the list of possibilities. Read their website and call a few taking the following questions into consideration.

Some of the things to ask the therapist or look for on their website or to ask in an email or phone call are:

1. How long have they been in business? (While there are some great therapists just out of school, you have a better chance of getting a great massage by finding someone who has been in the business 5 years or more.)

2. Tell them about what condition you have that you are seeking help with and ask what experience they have had with that condition.

3. Ask them what training they have had? Deep Tissue and Swedish Massage are the most common, but there are over 250 different types of massage and more emerging everyday.

4. Ask them if they offer a free 1/2 hour or some kind of special so you can come in and meet them.

5. You should be able to tell if you would like to try them after a few minutes just by trusting your instincts. How do they make you feel when you talk to them or get a email response? Do they take the time to explain things? Do they call you or email you back quickly? (within an hour says something about the person and their integrity.)

6. If you already have had some massages you can ask them about specifics that you like -the amount of pressure you like, that you like to be touched with their hands and not tools or elbows, that you like your head and/or feet worked on or other specific areas. Tell them what techniques you have experienced and liked to see if they know what you are talking about.

After doing your research the only thing you can do is try one. And then, just because it didn't work out the first time, doesn't necessarily mean that the person is not for you. It sometimes takes awhile for the therapist to know your needs. Every body is so unique that it takes time to build a relationship.

It also requires that you take the time and effort to ask for what you want to make that massage great for you!

Massage has been practiced as a therapeutic and healing modality for several years in numerous cultures all over the world. Some people are still unsure about massage even as the obvious proliferation of discount massage salons have made massage therapy ubiquitous and accessible to all. It is my belief that the lack of equal hours in training and various laws regarding massage have spurned certain attitudes and misconceptions regarding massage therapy as a legitimate practice. Below are some common misconceptions regarding therapeutic massage that I'd like to clear up for everyone.

Massage is an expensive luxury service. When you say massage, the image that most people conjure up is a scene at a luxury destination spa where people are waiting at your beck and call. This sort of imagery can make most people feel that massage is not within their reach financially. There is a massage for every price range but remember, you get what you pay for.

Massage therapists are shady. It's unfortunate that many people are doing other things under the guise of massage. It makes it frustrating and a bit insulting to those who are working hard to promote the positive benefits of legitimate massage and then be grouped with those that are offering less than legitimate services under the heading of massage.

Massage isn't a viable treatment for pain and injuries. Europe and Canada have long recognized massage for its therapeutic quality as a stress reliever and for injury treatment. All over the world, many countries practice a more preventative approach to health care.

Massage is going to hurt. Massage should never hurt. If it hurts, the therapist is either not paying attention or is not checking in. A good massage therapist is also a good communicator. If a therapist is not listening to you when you mention that something hurts, then end the massage right away. A massage is never supposed to be painful. A comfortable soreness is acceptable but pain is not.

Massage is going to tickle me. If a massage is tickling someone, the therapist is obviously not using enough pressure. If you are prone to being ticklish, let your therapist know so they can apply a different quality of pressure.

If you think that everyone likes tapotement, you are kidding yourself. Seriously, if you're using tapotement in every massage you do, it's time to break it up. tapotement is loud and stimulating. Quieter techniques are appreciated by those who need a massage for relaxation.

Governmental bodies that were late to regulating massage have caused therapists in those areas to be taken less seriously than other areas where massage has been a regulated wellness practice for years. In the United States you'll find a large gap in the hours of training and license requirements. This is unfortunate for massage therapists when trying to move their license to another state.

All massage therapists are vegetarian, into new age and worship crystals! I always laugh when people ask me these things. It's amazing how quickly people make judgments on lifestyle preferences based on an occupation. There are many massage therapists who are vegetarian, new age and believe in crystals and that's cool. please don't assume we all belong to that club. By the way, I do think that crystals are beautiful to enjoy.

The massage therapist will judge my body. I have yet to meet a massage therapist who is judgmental on someone's body. Over the years I've been asked the annoying question, "How does my body rate from a scale of 1-10?" Seriously, I tell clients that I'm looking for limited range of motion and compensation in the body. That will usually get them off that topic. You can come up with your own clever response to that line of questioning!

So there you have it folks, a few of the misconceptions about massage therapy as a profession and massage therapists in general. I'm sure you've heard others. It's important to show the world the professionals that we are so we can spread the positive messages about massage therapy as a positive addition to a healthy lifestyle.

Tradition has it that conflict is bad; it is something to be avoided.

The culture of many organizations implies explicitly or implicitly that conflict should be suppressed and eliminated. It is common for managers to perceive intra-organizational conflict as being dysfunctional for the achievement of organizational goals. Most of us still cling to the idea that good managers resolve conflict.

Current thinking disputes this view. In the absence of conflicting opinions, harmonious tranquil work groups are prone to becoming static, apathetic and unresponsive to pressures for change and innovation. They also risk the danger of becoming so self-satisfied, that dissenting views - which may offer important alternative information - are totally shut out. In short, they fall victims to a syndrome called "GROUPTHINK"

In a study of public policy decision fiascos, I.L Janis identified "GROUPTHINK" as a major cause of poor decision making. As he describes it, 'groupthink' occurs when decision makers who work closely together develop a high degree of solidarity that clouds their vision, leading them to suppress conflicting views and negative feelings about proposals, consciously or unconsciously.

A manifestation of the groupthink phenomenon is the staggering irrationality which can beset the thinking of the otherwise highly competent, intelligent, conscientious individuals when they begin acting as a group or team.

EFFECT AND SYMPTOMS OF GROUPTHINK

The net effect on the group is that it overestimates its power and morality, it creates pressures for uniformity and conformance, and its members become close-minded, living in ivory towers. Some manifestations are the illusions of invulnerability and the encouragement to take great risks and to ignore the ethical or moral aspects of their decisions and actions.

This author has witnessed close-mindedness on the part of several managers which then permeated their teams. One project manager took this to the extreme and in effect defined his environment as consisting of two kinds of people, either "friends" or "enemies" - The "you are either for me or you are against me" syndrome.

The friends were people who completely agreed with his favoured solutions and supported his project. All others were enemies.

Soon his entire project team was echoing similar sentiments having fallen victim to "GROUPTHINK", resulting in unbending positions, heated arguments and subsequent lack of respect for anyone who disagreed with them; the ultimate consequences can easily be guessed.

The symptoms of groupthink include:

(i) An illusion of invulnerability that becomes shared by most members of the group.

(ii) Collective attempts to ignore or rationalize away items of information which might otherwise lead the group to reconsider shaky but cherished assumptions.

(iii) An unquestioned belief in the group's inherent morality, thus enabling members to overlook the ethical consequences of their decisions.

(iv) Stereotyping the dissenters as either too evil for negotiation or too stupid and feeble to merit consideration.

(v) A shared illusion of unanimity in a majority viewpoint, augmented by the false assumption that silence means consent.

(vi) Self-appointed "mind-guards" to protect the group from adverse information that might shatter complacency about the effectiveness and morality of their decision.

Not very surprisingly it has been suggested that individuals most susceptible to groupthink will tend to be people fearful of disapproval and rejection.

Conversely, an outspoken individualist who freely airs his views and opinions, if trapped in a groupthink situation, runs the risk of being ejected by his colleagues if he fails to hold his tongue.

GROUPTHINK SITUATIONS

THE DOMINANT LEADER

Firstly, because the CEO [or the "Boss"] dispenses all favours, his biggest problem is to avoid being treated like God. Secondly, the "Boss" must avoid thinking that he is God.

Indeed, in many organizations, it is not easy to contradict or argue too vigorously with the boss.

Even when managers feel that they know more than a superior, they may suppress doubts because of career considerations.

Fear, respect for authority, and even admiration may make sceptics hesitate when confronted with a confident CEO or dominating superior. This is less of a problem if the leader acts in the organization's interests, possesses requisite soft skills, and has strong ethics and cognitive capabilities to make decisions.

However, if a leader does not force serious questioning, he or she will sometimes make mistakes and errors of judgement. Colleagues will become "yes-men", and groupthink will take over decision making. And the dominant CEO may not discover his or her mistakes because fearful employees withhold information.

What can lower-level managers do about the boss who has lost touch with reality and seems to be driving the organization in the wrong direction?

One can adopt three different strategies:

(i) "Exit" (Leave the organization)
(ii) "Voice" (attempt to force changes from within)
(ii) "Loyalty" (accept things the way they are)

Each individual can evaluate the risks and benefits of each strategy.

However, if the organization is really on the wrong track, true loyalty requires an attempt to communicate one's reservations and concerns to the leader.

How can a confident, independent CEO avoid the pitfalls and temptations of absolute power? The obvious (but difficult) answer is to make sure that power is never absolute, and surround oneself with other confident, independent people, and encourage dissension and debate on every decision.

In his autobiography 'A Soldier's Story' General ON Bradley has exemplified this aspect in the decision-making style of General George C Marshall, Chief of Staff of the US Army in World War II, a dominant leader who was instrumental in the Allied Victory owing to his resolute management of the entire war effort. "Gentlemen, I am disappointed in you. You haven't yet disagreed with a single decision I have made," he told his staff after one week in office. "When you carry a paper in here, I want you to give me every reason you can think of as to why I should not approve it. If, in spite of your objections, my decision is still to go ahead, then I'll know I am right."

Rather than search for views that might reinforce his own, a CEO should seek contrary opinions to avoid groupthink. Some suggest using devil's advocates for all major decisions by assigning some individuals in all groups and teams to argue against the dominant view.

PARALLEL POWER

This is a "groupthink" situation in which individuals or groups low in the hierarchy are powerful enough to do what they want, even when contrary to organizational objectives. Such power may be based on specialized expertise or privileged access to information. Parallel power can lead to groupthink in two ways.

Firstly, senior managers may accept ideas from lower-level managers that are not necessarily in the organizational interest, either because they have insufficient information to ask the right questions, or because opposition would not seem legitimate.

Secondly, top managers may make decisions without all the necessary information because subordinates do not provide it due to vested interests arising from misplaced loyalties to a limited function, department or team, rather than to the organization as a whole.

Such situations can be mitigated by ensuring that managers rotate between different units and positions.

NATURAL UNANIMITY

When everyone in power instinctively shares the same opinion on an issue, the wise manager should be wary. Natural unanimity groupthink results in an inward-looking organization detached from its environment.

Escape from this predicament almost certainly requires a fresh perspective that can come only from outside, by hiring new managers or appointing outside consultants.

A CEO may lay overemphasis on staff - line cooperation in the belief that the easiest way to ensure implementation is to recommend only those actions that the line managers agree with. But this is not necessarily useful to an organization and may lead to mutual admiration and, ultimately, 'natural unanimity groupthink'.

The effectiveness of staff - line dichotomy depends on maintaining a certain tension between the staff and the line managers. When the tension disappears, the staff may not be doing its job.

CONCLUSION

The key element in any strategy for avoiding groupthink is to instil checks and balances into the system. Formally, this can be achieved through cross-functional teams, staff advisers, external consultants, or procedures like "devil's advocacy".

Informally, managers must learn to tolerate dissidence, criticism, contrary opinions, discussion, brainstorming and debate and encourage their colleagues to express doubts about proposals. Propositions from various parts of the organization need to be treated transparently, equitably, and consistently, to avoid groupthink.

In a nutshell, for effective decision making, steer clear of yes-men, ego-massage, sycophancy and groupthink.

As physical therapists we can either take the time to do warm fuzzy "paperwork" that will make our patients love, remember, and reimburse us directly or we can do the onerous paperwork required by third "party" payers. We can invest time congratulating our patients on birthdays and wishing them well on holidays or spend our holidays checking how much of our hard-earned money is in the "60-90" day "bucket". I have done both and know which I prefer.

Cash practice physical therapist Linda, of Spokane Valley, WA, says, "I could not stand to do the kind of paperwork that involves working with insurance companies. I'm not sure that I'm smart enough [She is very smart!] to read all those manuals and do all that kind of work. I would much rather write birthday cards and Christmas cards than deal with the insurance companies. I don't know how therapists stand to do that... I am booked out in my office for three months." She accepts no third party payments. She has no accounts receivable. Besides a tiny yellow pages ad that's all the "marketing" she does.

The first time I gave a graduation "Certificate of Appreciation" to a patient I couldn't believe the results. The family of the patient framed it and hung it on her wall! To do this I found a Microsoft Word(TM) template, typed in her name, printed it in color on card stock on our inkjet printer. I then signed it and presented it to her on the last day of therapy. Of course my contact information was on the front.

Here are the steps to help you get started:

Create a birthday and address list from your patients of the last couple of years. If you are just starting out use prospective patients, their families, or those who MAY refer to you. Start with those who know you best and work out from there.

If you are just starting out:

Get simple business cards printed stating your contact information and at least one benefit of your services. Next go to the "49 cent factory card outlet" and buy enough cool looking blank cards to get you through your first month. You can use these for both birthdays and holidays. I highly suggest sending cards at Thanksgiving time. Tell your patients how thankful you are for them. You can also send email Yahoo(TM) and other free greetings if you get your customers' permission. These have the advantage of going out on schedule. Just enter their electronic birthday card as you input their information after you evaluate them. Don't settle for just electronic cards though as they don't have quite the "warm fuzzy" appeal. Send both.

If you have a substantial list of customers:

Order pre-printed birthday and holiday cards. Make a list and send them out on schedule. To save postage costs and processing time you can get postcard style cards. If you want to know exactly what to say on the cards Linda's birthday cards read, "Wishing you the happiest of birthdays...and a year of good health". She gets them from Health-Prose at 800-541-3382. Customer appreciation is just like a home exercise program. It only works if you do it. If you do it IT WILL WORK.

The best advertising is word of mouth. Writing birthday cards can leverage your word of mouth marketing. When one of your birthday card recipients gets called by a good friend it is quite possible that he or she will tell that friend that he or she got a card from you. They likely will leave the card from you up on their counter for a few days thereby deepening their warm and fuzzy feelings toward you and or your practice. There are ways to get the warm fuzzies going where you want them whether it be to you directly or to your practice that you are growing.

You became a therapist because you wanted to help others. Following these simple steps will extend your ability to continue helping others - with a SMILE!

As opposed to modern day massaging techniques, the art of erotic and sensual massage, as espoused in the Kama Sutra and Tantra has deep roots. Although, sensual massage was not mentioned directly in Kama Sutra, but its various tips and techniques can be applied safely in sensual and erotic massage, like understanding the power of communication, understanding the body chemistry and paying attention to details.

There is a general feeling that Kama Sutra is all about sexuality, perhaps the topic where most people are wrong is that the biggest Kama Sutra sex lesson is about how to live life and approach human relations in a rational and logical way. It is not necessarily means only sex, but pleasure from deep within. However, sometimes that includes sex, sometimes marriage and even sometimes, it means group interactions and other social skills.

Instead of being just a book of sex tips, artistic and gymnastic sex positions, the Kama Sutra makes it clear that technique is no substitute for deep passion and love. Sex, love, and intimacy need to be approached as an artistic ritual. So if we see the art of sensual and erotic massage from the perspectives of the Kama Sutra and Tantra, it is not just about relieving the physical tensions due to stressful situations or to get sensual pleasure, but much more than that to heal the body, mind and soul together.

It is all about rejuvenating the total personality of the person from the deep within. It is all about celebrating our life together, as we are, by finding something deep within us. In ancient India body was considered to be the temple and all sensual pleasures were considered to be holy and sacred rather than perceiving as dirty.

From the teaching of Kama Sutra and Tantra you can entice, allure and charm your lover with sensual massage. In actual sense, sensual massage creates a bond of communication between you and your partner, thus yourself becoming aware of your whole body and its role in giving the massage, allowing you to let go of the world outside. This new world is something that we generally haven't seen and experienced before.

If done correctly under the right environment by a right person, these massaging techniques can heal you from the deep within, as sensual massage is a holistic therapy in that it works on the person as a whole. Moreover, it is an excellent way of treating minor ailments, stress and negative emotional states in any person due to any reason.

In any massaging technique, whether it is therapeutic, sensual or erotic massage, the art of touch plays a very important role. Sometimes, it differs from person to person who touches and to whom massaging is performed (giver and receiver).

Basically, it is the quality of touch that takes one on a journey into the deepest realms of self and soul, and that subtly, gently and ingeniously encourages one to access the imprints and holding patterns that limit the freedom of the body, mind and soul, and encourages the deepest safety to let go, to dance freer and soar higher than ever before.

But that doesn't mean that you can't learn this special art. Surely, you can learn, relearn and unlearn secrets that will help you to becoming absolutely irresistible to your partner.

It is stimulating and soothing touch sensations with exotic aromatic oils that is both titillating and healing. It is all about learning to touch and being touched, for a wonderful and intimate relationship. For your physical experience to last for a long time, the physic must be healed first, especially energy of past relationship which lingers within the physic (it may be due to any number of reasons, sometimes known and sometimes unknown to us). This energy, usually negative energy, has made lots of compatible relationship fail. Whereas, the true art of sensual massage uses sexual energy to rejuvenate internal energy, frees blocked emotions from past and present life and thus makes us more relieved and pleasured.

Sensual or erotic massage, as the name suggests, is all about communicating with your partner by touching. It is a better way to feel one another through body, mind and soul. In the physical world we sense in different ways such as by taste, smell, sight, sound and touch but among all of them touching affects us much. For an instance take an example of a kid who has just joined the school, you can explain a thing to him, it will not affect him much but if you give a thing to him to touch, to play, he will better understand and certainly will not forgot it for long time.

The same thing applies in real life; you can express your feelings for your lover more efficiently by touching because touch is the primary sense we develop, the first one that an embryo experiences within the womb as it strokes its thumb or finger across its skin. You like to touch things you love, you like and you want to get. The same principle applies here in our relationships, but we generally fail to recognize it.

When it comes to relationship touch plays a very vital role. A touch tells who we are and it gives a sense of ourselves from deep within. Touching is the best way to express our love, feelings and thoughts and it makes us feel that we are not lonely and somebody's around us.

In fact, a huge part of our' brain is given over to the sensory and tactile department. All of our senses, particularly our skin responses, are the bridge between the outer realities of life and our internal experiences of them. Touch, skin, feelings, sensuality are inextricable from one another. By touching we can examine our surroundings more deeply, more closely in short they are the antidotes to our thinking. The way that we as lovers, touch defines the bond between both the partners.

There are so many ways Massage Therapy can benefit you. A healthy body relies on the happy co-operation of the body's skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, lymphatic, nervous, respiratory, digestive and urinary systems - and this type of bodywork benefits all of these. In addition, the tone and condition of the skin improves.

Massage affects you physically, emotionally and physiologically. It is very relaxing and helps to dissipate fatigue and muscle strain. It can also improve your immunity to disease, by increasing the white blood cells. Improved oxygenation helps the tissues to receive the nourishment they need and elimination improves, often with accompanying reduction in water retention.

Relief from headaches, anxiety and insomnia can also occur. Scar tissue is sometimes seen to reduce and regular healing bodywork can help you recover after an operation. By improving muscle tone and balance, the physical stress placed on bones and joints is improved.

If your work involves long hours of standing on hard floors, lifting heavy objects or having to sit for lengthy periods, you may end up with back pain, tense shoulders and other uncomfortable symptoms. Repetitive strain can result from remaining in the same position for unnatural amounts of time.

If your joints tend to be stiff from too much or too little exercise and you suffer from various aches and pains, regular massage could be very helpful. Massage is very useful for dancers, sports people and others who rely on their body being in tip top condition for their work.

Even babies can derive great benefit from a massage. In ancient cultures, such as in India, it was common practice to gently rub oil into an infant's limbs, to assist its health and benefit the joints and skin. Research conducted on children who had been massaged daily by their parents showed a marked increase in their health.

Some of the more difficult effects of aging can be ameliorated by good physical therapy. Sessions are often a welcome addition to the care provision in hospices, because of its deeply calming effects.

Psychological difficulties like depression can be alleviated. The beneficial effects on the body's system help to promote positive and healthy mental states, partly because of hormones (endorphins) released by the process.

The word in Arabic which means 'to knead bread' is the origin of our word 'massage.' Sessions include applying kneading movements to the muscles as well and more direct pressure to the deeper tissues.

During a session, the therapist will rub and knead muscles to dissolve the tension and soreness stored in them. Traditional strokes have names like 'effleurage' (a gentle stroking, sweeping motion), 'petrissage' which deeply kneads and squeezes the underlying muscles and 'tapotement', or 'hacking' which applies rhythmic percussive movements, using the sides of the hands, the fingertips or cupped hands which stimulate the body.

Preventative care is crucial to maintain good health. A regular physical therapy session will calm and revitalise you, so improving the function of your whole system. If you need a bit of time just to relax or need advice and help with a health problem, massage could help you in building a more naturally healthy and productive lifestyle.

The elderly are a group of people often plagued with muscle and joint pains and deteriorating health and sicknesses that many persons are unable to relieve. For this reason, elderly massage is used to help improve the well being and health of senior citizens. Elderly therapeutic massage is simply a massage meant for the elderly. The technique used is vastly different than the one used in younger persons. Massage therapists must be aware of several issues such as the physical changes the elderly body goes through. For this reason the techniques used during therapeutic massage is different as massage therapists have to be cautious and extra sensitive in certain areas.

When persons get older they partake in less activity, which includes walking, running or just simple exercise. This reduction of physical activity contributes to the decreasing quality of life of elderly people. Therapeutic type of massage for the elderly has shown to manage and smoothen out the effects of ageing. Illnesses such as arthritis, aching joints, swelling and general pain can be alleviated.

The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, or NCBTMB for short, spends a lot of time promoting elderly therapeutic massage. Many people are aware that elderly massage exists but some are not knowledgeable of its many benefits.

In today's society it is very important for the elderly to partake in regular therapeutic massages. The population is ageing every day and it is important to take care of the elderly by seeking effective methods of care such as this kind of massage. Within western society a large percentage of health care expenditure is spent on caring for the elderly. It is highly beneficial to the ageing population as it helps to reduce and relieve the negative effects of getting old. This will further benefit society and possibly enable the elderly to have longer and more pain free lives. Society will thus have a happier and healthier elderly population.

Several benefits for this type of massage include:
- It has a high calming effect to the elderly person which in turn helps them to deal with medical issues with more stride and hope.
- It greatly improves both posture and muscle tension. Many older persons experience bone loss and slouch over time. It helps the elderly to relieve their muscle tension. It also helps them to receive a higher quality of rest enabling them to sleep deeper and longer and wake up fully refreshed and rejuvenated. This has a significant benefit to their general heath.
- It also helps to boost mental awareness and energy levels.
- It also increases muscle coordination, range of motion and overall strength.
- It assists the control of arthritic pain and also enables the elderly to manage other types of pain well.
- Lastly, according to the Touch Research Institute, therapeutic massage is a very beneficial treatment for persons with Alzheimer's disease. It has been shown to increase communication and relaxation throughout the debilitating disease.

Therapeutic massage is a very beneficial process for the elderly and it is very important that they attend regular sessions. This is a natural solution to the effects of ageing and can help to slow down the ageing process which improves their quality of life.

Occupational therapy is a health profession that assists people with physical or mental impairments to engage in their daily routines. An occupational therapist may work with families and individuals, to encourage activity. This is achieved by modifying the environment, learning or re-learning skills, adjusting the activity, or facilitating mental or physical rehabilitation.

Occupational therapists are accredited at the Masters level through university study. To be admitted to a Master of Occupational Therapy program, the student must hold an accredited Bachelors degree in any subject. However, there are prerequisites that should be fulfilled at the undergraduate level. These vary from school to school, but most require at least a B average at 300 and 400 level courses; three credits in Human Anatomy at the 300 level, with an emphasis on gross musculature; three credits in social sciences; three credits in behavioral sciences. Some also require a course in statistics. Seventy hours of volunteer or work experience with people who have cognitive, physical or emotional disabilities are also required before admission to some graduate programs in Occupational Therapy. Some programs also require courses in physiology, child development, and developmental psychology of adolescents and adults. A prospective student must also display competence in the English language.

The exceptions to these prerequisites is the School of Occupational Therapy at University of Western Ontario, School of Rehabilitative Therapy at Queen's University, and School of Physical and Occupational Therapy at McGill University which require only the completion of a four-year undergraduate degree with a minimum B average in the last ten full courses.

The School of Rehabilitative Science at McMaster University requires only one course in biologic or life science, and one course in social science or humanities. School of Occupational Therapy at Dalhousie University requires six credits in human physiology, and three credits in human anatomy. The program at McGill incorporates a qualifying year, which ensures that all participants in the program have the same basis for continuing studies at the graduate level.

The Masters programs all cover a core of courses and clinical practicum to prepare the student for work in a variety of settings. These courses cover the theory of occupational therapy, health conditions and occupations, professional practice, human anatomy, assessment and analysis, wellness by design of technology, research methodology, social influences on occupational performance, neuroscience, pharmacology, and applied research.

The Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) is the body overseeing the certification of Occupational Therapists. Schools offering the program meet the criteria of CAOT for their students. CAOT is affiliated with the World Federation of Occupational Therapists, meaning that graduates who complete a program in Canada meet the criteria to be licensed in countries that recognize the WFOT guidelines. Upon completion of studies, the graduate will be certified by the CAOT after writing the Certification Examination. CAOT also offers continuing education courses to its members.

Each province also has a regulatory body for the practice of Occupational Therapy and provincial associations. Many provincial organizations also offer continuing education for practitioners in their province.

The field of Occupational Therapy requires a lot of study and training. It is a great choice for those who want both a rewarding and lucrative career helping people function in their daily activities.

It has been hotly debated whether or not the massage therapist should use herbal oil as part of the general massage of the entire body. As a recipient of regular massage, I find that the oil benefits me greatly by reducing the friction between me and the therapist's hands.

Whether or not the massage therapist uses oil, there are health benefits to getting a massage.

A good massage:

  1. Relieves high blood pressures and promotes normal blood pressure.

  2. Relieves stress-related disorders associated with sleeplessness and headaches.

  3. Relieves many kinds of aches and pains especially in the joints.

  4. Promotes normal heart rhythm and increases the efficiency of the heart.

  5. Enhances skin tone and increases the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the body's tissues and organs.

  6. Relieves depression and anxiety.

  7. Improves muscle tone and increases mobility and flexibility.

  8. Relieves indigestion and constipation and helps to remove gastrointestinal gases associated with bloating and flatulence.

  9. Stimulates the lymphatic system by promoting the elimination of waste products, such as lactic acid, from your cells and tissues. This lactic acid can contribute to joint and muscle stiffness.

Keep in mind that a good massage is not the answer to cure or treat any disorder. It is simply a procedure to rejuvenate, repair wasted tissues, promote energy, and enhance function in the bodily organs. It is natural to feel relaxed and energized when the body has received a proper massage especially when more fatigued or ailing body parts receive a good massage.

It is incorrect to assume that a good massage is possible through the use of oils on the body. Each client is different and will have his/her preferences. The use of oils is only one aspect of massage therapy. There are other techniques within the profession of massage therapy that are practiced regularly. They include but are not limited to reflexology, shiatsu, panchakarma, Swedish/Western massage, Thai massage, and myofascial release.

Massage therapy is not an absolute way to obtaining optimal health. It does not replace traditional medicine. Massage therapy helps to relax your muscles, remove mental and physical fatigue, improve circulation, improve digestion, and give you an increased sense of well-being

There are some positions in the field of medicine which offer people opportunities other than basic nursing. A physical therapy assistant works with patients who have undergone certain procedures, in order to help them regain the function of their muscles. This type of work is often classified as rehabilitative and is frequently given to people who have undergone surgery for the removal of a limb. People who work in this field are often employed by hospitals, but can be employed by medical centers such as burn units or government operated facilities.

People who want to work as assistants in the field of physical therapy will need to possess an associate degree. The courses covered in this program will include those in the fields of biology, chemistry and anatomy. People who work in health care professions are also required to take some type of psychology course during their studies. This type of program will incorporate two parts to the learning experience. Students will be required to have a certain number of classroom hours as well as clinical experience. The hands on training provided in a clinical setting is extremely valuable when learning how to properly care for people with debilitating conditions.

Some of the tasks a physical therapy assistant performs includes applying compresses to sore or stiff muscles. The compresses can be designed to transfer heat to the affected area in order to stimulate the flow of blood. This person will also be trained in the proper use of all of the related equipment used for therapy purposes. As an assistant, the health care worker will oversee the patient's use of the equipment and provide help when needed. Physical therapy also includes providing physical exercise to increase range of motion, which can be given without the use of machines.

The amount of money a person can earn in this field, will depend on where there are employed and how long they are employed in their position. People who receive bachelor degrees can earn more money then those who earn their associate degree. A starting salary for this position ranges between twenty and forty thousand dollars a year. People who have been employed for eighteen or more years can expect to earn as much as seventy-five thousand dollars as their yearly salary. These amounts do not include the wages paid for overtime hours or the health care benefit packages included with employment.

While massage has been most commonly regarded as simply a service to help you relax, there are actually numerous benefits that your body experiences. For those who are seeking to achieve a healthy body and overall wellness, massages can play an essential role in your fitness agenda.

As we exercise, our bodies expend energy. Our muscles can become sore or even strained, especially during the first few fitness sessions we undergo. And like a car, we sometimes need a tune-up in order to continue functioning at 100%.

Helping body functions

The most commonly renowned benefit of a massage is to loosen and relax the muscles. During a workout, lactic acid can form in the muscles, which is what causes the "muscle burn" we feel the day after. This happens when these bodily chemicals accumulate in the muscle tissue, causing a burning feeling, but it can also leave you with little desire to get moving again. Lactic acid is commonly the result of lack of oxygen in the muscle tissue and forms as a result of muscle activity. This irritation commonly dissipates within a few days, but not before lactic acid has hindered the tissue's ability to metabolize minerals and nutrients properly.

By massaging the muscles, you can recover from soreness or injury and even prevent it in the future. This is because the massage provides more oxygen and nutrients to the surrounding tissues. Blood flow is increased to the areas, specifically the muscles. Because the muscles are responsible for movement and ultimately play a key role in converting food into fuel, their proper function is essential to any fitness agenda.

In addition to increasing blood flow, massages increase the body's ability to detoxify itself by pushing chemicals out of the muscles. Toxins, including lactic acid, are able to be transferred out of their stored status and back into circulation. Because the toxins are being removed from the body, be sure to drink plenty of water to help eliminate them properly.

At the physical level, massage therapy will chemically help return wellness and increase your natural healing ability. Without the harmful toxins that could hinder your fitness agenda, your body will be less susceptible to injury and far more efficient. Even though the lymph system and liver are primarily responsible for eliminating toxins, the toxins can still accumulate and are normally stored in fatty and muscular tissues, making it difficult to properly process them. Sources of the toxins can vary anywhere between unhealthy diets to contaminants in the air we breathe. They can even be by-products of the body's natural processes, such as lactic acid. By incorporating regular massages into your fitness agenda, you can help your body eliminate these toxins

A mental boost

While the muscles are often regarded as receiving the most benefit, there is also a psychological advantage to massages. The mental affects can come in the two different types of both chemical and emotional healing. Together, these benefits help the mind respond and function properly to ensure wellness in its entirety.

Chemically, your brain is apt to boost serotonin and dopamine, which are hormones within the body that make you feel good. During the process of the massage, you are able to relax and enjoy the experience, allowing for these naturally secreted chemicals to boost your mood. This is a natural and healthy way to increase confidence and initiative. But that's not all it does, since it is also known to lower the stress hormone cortisol. Both of these effects combined will not only affect your mood, but also increase your body's resistance to negativity.

As your body experiences these positive effects, you will also find yourself in a better emotional state. A body that feels great along with a mind that functions clearly provide you with the exact tools you need to remain positive. Emotionally, you are also put in a far better state of mind that will allow you to focus and achieve your goals. It isn't just because you experience the internal changes secreted in your brain, it comes from a conglomeration of effects that result from the body's relaxation and increased healing that causes your muscles and mind to respond well to during and after massages.

For the active person, regular massages can prove to be a beneficial asset to any fitness program. You can increase the body's healing abilities and overall function, while at the same time positively affecting your mind. Throughout the body, the massage provides a great number of advantages that will help you achieve overall well-being.

For professional athletes maintaining muscle condition and suppleness is not just a beneficial perk it is a vital component of their training regimen. When your lively hood depends on your body operating at its full potential, risking a torn ligament or a pulled muscle is just not worth it. Maintaining peak physical conditioning at all times, being constantly prepared for sports activity requires a lot of different practices. So massage techniques specially designed for sports people have come about and been integrated into most professional athletes repertoire of training practices.

Big league soccer teams, American football teams, basketball teams and any other sport where global excellence in sporting acumen must be matched with almost superhuman levels of physicality will typically have a sports masseur or even a team of massage specialists on hand to keep the athletes ready for play.

Before matches it is used to help loosen up muscles as part of a stretching and limbering routine to help prevent any cramps or strains occurring during the match or event. It has the added benefit of helping the athlete relax and focus their mind in preparation for the match which can require levels of concentration as intense as the levels of fitness required.

Of course, having the therapist there on the sidelines of a match is necessary for when an athlete does eventually strain a muscle or a tendon during play. Again, after the match or event, therapeutic sports massage can help muscles in the cooling down phase after intense activity and help the muscles in their natural healing process by moving blood through the area to allow for new muscle cells to form.

But for the rest of us who are not multimillionaire sports superstars this kind of massage therapy may seem superfluous. The fact is its just as important for ordinary fitness as it is for professionals. A professional athlete's body is conditioned over years for intense activity. For those of us who can only make it to the gym a few times a week or play with a local team for fitness at the weekends muscle injuries are a much more likely occurrence. And puling a muscle in your neck or leg can mean you miss a week of work or at least make it very uncomfortable. A professional athlete may only have a few weeks of actual events they have to attend throughout the year so are more likely to have the time to rest an injury.

Finding time on a lunch break once or twice a week for a sports massage can ensure that you don't receive any injuries that may put you out of work for a few days. Even if an injury doesn't prevent you from working it will likely prevent you from working out. Anyone who has an ordinary day job knows how quickly you can get out of shape just from missing a week or two of training. Months of hard work sweating at the gym or the pool can be undone in a few days of being stuck on the couch.

There has been a recent study by Boris Prilutsky, MA, and Victor Gura, M.D., concerning the benefits that might be derived from medical massage by those who suffer from hypertension that is caused by arterial hypertension.

In the United States, it is estimated that as many as 70 million people suffer from hypertension. Of that 70 million, only about 8% are diagnosed with an actual cause for the high blood pressure, such as kidney insufficiency, a tumor on the adrenal gland, or narrowing of the aorta. A full 2% are simply diagnosed with essential hypertension. It is the same condition. It is just a condition without a named cause.

The study conducted by Gura and Prilutsky determined that most hypertension patients with musculoskeletal abnormalities can benefit from medical massage. There were only six patients involved in this study.

Medical massage therapy is defined as a soft-tissue mobilization method. The massage causes an acceleration of blood flow and lymphatic drainage as well as a mechanical breakdown of soft tissue calcifications. The objectives of the pilot study was to determine whether or not the elimination of musculoskeletal abnormalities in the reflex zones would cause the elimination of pain in the neck and upper back as well as headaches, increase range of motion, and cause a reduction in blood pressure.

Cardio examinations and blood pressure readings were taken before the start of treatments and again after they concluded. Each participant received a medical massage treatment every other day for a total of 15 treatments. That was followed by a two-week break, after which another course of 15 treatments was administered.

At the end of the study, all participants reported the disappearance of their pain. It was also evident that symptoms were eliminated from reflex zones and blood pressure readings returned to the normal range.

Careers that include physical therapy jobs are in demand! If you are thinking about becoming a PT or you are already one, healthcare staffing agencies can help you which connects those who have obtained a degree with health care professionals. Educational institutions, outpatient clinics, nursing facilities, and physician's offices are continually looking for qualified candidates. Some other avenues for employment include acute care, home health care, and rehab units.

Physical therapists address problems that a patient has due to an accident of some kind. Sports injuries are common in this area. Many times the patient has a disabling or chronic condition. Some of these are sprains, fractures, and arthritis, burns, stroke, or back and neck injuries. Also included can be amputations, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and spina bifida. Physical therapy jobs encompass joining and practicing with other professionals. This includes consulting with primary care physicians, nurses, and dentists, and audiologists. Often educators and social workers are contacted. Speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists can also form the team that comes together to aid the injured patient.

Physical therapy jobs take place in hospitals, outpatient clinics, or private offices that have specially equipped facilities. Sometimes it is appropriate to administer treatment in the patient's home, office, or hospital room. It is very important the physical therapist to possess a good amount of bodily strength. Helping the person get to and from treatment areas is often required. They provide assistance daily with exercises or help the patient on and off equipment or massage tables. PTs also spend a majority of the day on their feet, including kneeling, stooping, bending, crouching, or lifting treatment equipment.

40 hour work weeks are the average for physical therapy jobs. Sometimes therapists work nights or weekends to accommodate patient schedules. Part-time work is also common for PTs. In a survey conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, more than three quarters of PTs surveyed reported being "very satisfied" with their occupation. So what are you waiting for? Contact a specialist today, online or by telephone. A team is also available to talk about exciting new opportunities in this field of helping people recover from trauma and injuries. Candidates for this profession need a post-baccalaureate degree from an accredited physical therapy program. Passing scores on national and state examinations are also required to enter this field.

It's no secret that more people are looking for new careers. Probably the biggest reason is the current state of the economy. With so many people out of a job, or in a job with shrinking hours and benefits, people are looking for a new skill set that will sustain them and their families for years to come. One popular field many are getting into is massage therapy. But is it all that some think it is? Here's a closer look at what you can expect as a massage therapist.

To begin with, you'll have to be state licensed and certified. Some states will also require that you have a business license and carry insurance! Not only that, but some are requiring 4 years of training and school before you can sit for the certification test! Sure, there are still states that allow a Bachelor degree or trade school degree to be eligible for certification, but more and more are going with longer school requirements. It will pay to check to see what your state requires.

Many people who enter this field so so because they think there's fast and easy money to be made. Such is not the case. Sure, you have a few individuals making over $50,000 per year as a Massage Therapist, but these individuals have been doing this many years and have worked hard building up a loyal client list.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimate that the salary of an experienced therapist is around $16 an hour. So that means that beginners will earn even less. The sad fact is that many beginners will leave this field in a matter of years due to several circumstances, low pay being one of them.

If you're lucky as a massage therapist, you'll find a salon or agency to work for. I think the lure of this business is that you can be your own boss and have low start up cost. But if you dig deeper, you'll see it may not be as economical to start up as your own boss as you think.

You'll have to buy all your equipment. If you'll be working out of your home, you'll need to dedicate one room to nothing other than a massage room. I'd say it was a safe bet to say that most beginners work out of their cars. They meet their clients at their homes or place of business to perform massages. They also work all kinds of strange hours in order to fit in picky clients. This isn't for everyone and is also one reason so many choose to leave the field after getting into it.

Finally, you'll have to put up with a wide range of personalities, not all of them good either. Some folks think that if they're paying your, they call the shots. They can be demanding and heartless. If you're the type of person who wears your heart on your sleeves, then you may want to look at another line of work!

But if you decide to stick it out, then you may find being a massage therapist as a rewarding and enlightening career choice!
